comparison of the Gaokao clloge entrance exam, and the New York Common Core State Test

The Gaokao is a Chinese college entrance exam that is about twice as long as the SAT and the signification is way higher. This test score is the only factor that matters for admissions to Chinese universities. It also assesses the teachers and decides weather they should keep their jobs, depending on the student’s test grades. Unlike the New York State Common Core Standards, (A.K.A state test,) The Gaokao test determines what college you go to, and what type of job you get. According to Brook Larmer and The New York Times Upfront Magazine, to fail the Gaokao test most likely means working in a factory or a construction site later in life.  The New York State Test is a test in which the state (New York) assesses how much the teachers have taught you and, partly affects your middle, and High School applications. However, in comparison to the Gaokao, the State Test is only 90 minutes and, it doesn’t decide something as important as college, or jobs. In all, the Gaokao test is more important than the New York Common Core State Test.

One reason the Gaokao college entrance exam is more important than The New York State Test, is because it affects job applications. According to Brook Larmer, in the New York Times Upfront Magazine, failing the Gaokao means working in a factory, or a construction site. This might be okay for some, but others could be disappointed at the fact that they studied hard, and did all their work, but their lives were ruined by one test. Moreover, The New York State Test is given from 3rd to 8th grade. This means that The New York State Test does not affect someone’s job application, in comparison to the Gaokao, which does affect someone’s job application. As a result, the Gaokao is a more important test than the New York State Test because it affects someone’s job application. This is one reason the Gaokao test is more important than the New York State Test.

Another reason the Gaokao college entrance exam is more important than The New York State Test is that the Gaokao directly affects school applications. According to the New York Times Upfront Magazine, “ Given every June over several days, the test is the only thing that matters for admission to Chinese universities.” This shows, that Chinese Universities only look at the Gaokao test when accepting students into their schools. In contrast, the New York State Test only affects school applications partly. (Middle schools, and High schools, that is. The New York State doesn’t affect college applications. ) Other factors middle schools take into consideration when accepting students is overall GPA, and absences, (how many times you miss school).  This shows, The New York State Test, is less important than the Gaokao test because it does not directly affect school applications. This is another reason the Gaokao test is more important than the New York State Test.

In all, the Gaokao test is more significant and meaningful than the New York State Test. This is because the stakes are higher. Teachers jobs depend on The Gaokao, 100% of student's college education depends on The Gaokao, and student's jobs depend on it. In summary, for those who think The New York State Test is hard, and the worst thing in the world; there will almost be something harder, and more challenging in life. However, if you put in the work, and the effort, things will sort themselves out.
